Who are we?
Eastbourne Shopmobility is a registered charity affiliated to the National Federation of Shopmobility.
The Scheme provides manual and powered wheelchairs and scooters to members of the public with limited mobility.
How we began…
In 1993 the Eastbourne Arndale Centre (now The Beacon) bought two manual wheelchairs for the use of customers with limited mobility. These proved so popular that gradually the service was expanded to include not only more manual wheelchairs but also motorised scooters and electric wheelchairs.
In 1999 a Co-ordinator was recruited and by the following year the service had achieved the requisite standard to be granted official ‘Shopmobility’ status.
Eastbourne Shopmobility became a Registered Charity in May 2003 and, apart from the Co-ordinator, relies entirely on volunteers for the day to day running of the service.
The Beacon still supports the scheme by providing free premises and the necessary services. However, Shopmobility is now responsible for the purchasing and servicing of all equipment and day to day running costs.
All donations and offers of voluntary help are gratefully received, just call into the office and speak to one of our volunteers.
